MS Walk Monroe NY

This year The Hudson Valley CERT assisted the MS foundation in their MS walk held in Monroe NY. The CERT members acted as Marshalls, assuring the 200 participants remained safely on the path.  For those who don’t know, MS, short for Multiple sclerosis, is a disease that affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other effectively. Almost any neurological symptom can appear with the disease and often progresses to physical and cognitive disability. As of yet, there is no known cure for multiple sclerosis.

The Hudson Valley CERT ( Community Emergency Response Team ) educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

This gentleman impressed me, he started out the walk in first place, and finished the 3 mile walk first. Hats off to him.

Team “Angel” participated in the walk, led by Karen, who suffers from MS. Karen gave the opening speech, and officially started off the walk. Her niece, Melissa, works as an EMT for Mobile Life Support Services.

Let’s hear it for all who came out to support this organization, may they find a cure for MS one day.
